Carnival of Souls - An Extraordinary Movie
Summary of Carnival of Souls:
For two-thirds of its spare 86 minutes, this remake of the 1962 cult classic is a tautly constructed, engaging, supernatural suspense thriller. Then, right when it needs to kick into high gear, it all goes flooey. Splatter fans will be disappointed by the low gore quotient and deliberate pacing; the film favors psychological horror over physical. The evil screaming worm-people that are intercut throughout the picture lose their shock value pretty quickly. The climax is, well, anticlimactic. And the shaggy-dog ending, which was a letdown in the original, is a letdown here too. But Larry Miller is superbly evil as the pederast and murderer who returns from the dead to terrorize the woman who helped put him behind bars. And Bobbie Phillips, despite her limitations, is nicely effective in the lead, especially in the quieter moments. It’s two-thirds of a good movie (but then again, so was Apocalypse Now). Trivia factoid: Sidney Berger, who was the creepy neighbor in the original, plays the older cop in the end sequence. –Geof Miller

Another take on the classic tale. This one’s a British version from 1969 with a more heartless version of the mad scientist. Instead of having a lab assistant to do his dirty work, this Dr. Frankenstien pushes a young doctor and his betrothed to kidnap the next victim. They must capture the mentally ill Dr. Brandt so that hi sbrain may be used in Dr. Frankenstein’s experiments.

Meticulously adapted from Edith Wharton’s 1905 novel, The House of Mirth may seem at first to be as dry (and as flat) as pressed flowers, but it’s quickly evident that director Terence Davies and X-Files star Gillian Anderson (in a breakthrough film role) have tapped directly into the venality of Wharton’s New York society. As the ill-fated socialite Lily Bart, Anderson perfectly conveys the understated wit and craftiness of a woman who knows how to play the game, and yet learns too late that it’s loaded with ruthless, unspoken rules. Rising above the traditional crop of “marriageable girls,” Lily is desired by any number of men who could ensure her place among the moneyed elite, but she deflects their courtship; lawyer Lawrence Selden (Eric Stoltz) is her true love but, tragically, his modest financial status leads them both into a cycle of unfulfilled romance.
Instead, Lily makes too many assumptions about her station, offending her aunt (Eleanor Bron), falling into a financial obligation to a manipulative investor (a curiously apt role for Dan Aykroyd), ostracized by a “friend” (Laura Linney), and refusing help from her most prominent would-be suitor (Anthony LaPaglia). All of these gaffes combine to forge Lily’s downfall, and Anderson brilliantly captures the horror and confusion of a woman who is shocked when her expectations are no longer matched by her reality. Lily grows defenseless and dependent, and The House of Mirth evolves from stately reserve to become a devastating portrait of class cruelty. Heavy stuff, to be sure, but expertly crafted and blessed by Anderson’s complex and heartbreaking performance. –Jeff Shannon

If you love watching Curtis Armstrong or Walt Becker, you are deffinetly going to want to watch National Lampoon’s Van Wilder [UMD for PSP].
In a futile but ambitiously decadent attempt to revive the loony legacy of National Lampoon comedies, Van Wilder will make you laugh out loud, or vomit, or both. It’s that kind of movie, in which the title character (played by sitcom survivor Ryan Reynolds) is the resident slacker of Coolidge College for seven years and running. Enjoying his party-animal supremacy and reluctant to fulfill his potential, he’s got an idolizing assistant from India (Kal Penn, the movie’s ethnic stereotype, desperate virgin, and comedic highlight), and a journalism major (Tara Reid) assigned to uncover the secret of Van’s controlled anarchy. Unfortunately, the movie’s more Down to You than Animal House, opting for familiar teen romance over campus shenanigans, despite an abundance of flatulence, diarrhea, sicko sex jokes, gratuitous nudity, and one gag (involving a bulldog) that’s disgusting by any standard. Keg-fueled frat-rats will surely elevate Van Wilder to semiclassic status; all others are urged to proceed with caution. –Jeff Shannon

Two-Lane Blacktop - How to Watch Quality Movies Online
James Taylor is The Driver, a car-obsessed racer with stringy hair and a concentration that precludes conversation. He travels the backroads of rural America with his buddy, The Mechanic (Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys), an equally obsessed lost soul at home only in the car or under the hood. They have no names, only designations, and no life outside of their gypsy existence, riding the unending highway in their souped-up ‘55 Chevy from race to race. After picking up a hitchhiking Girl (Laurie Bird), whose presence breaks the tunnel-vision focus of the two men, they challenge a middle-aged hotshot, the garrulous G.T.O. (Warren Oates) to a cross-country race. Monte Hellman’s Two-Lane Blacktop is the most alienated evocation of modern America ever made, an almost abstract study in dislocation and obsession set against a vague landscape of roadside diners and rest stops. Taylor and Wilson deliver appropriately blank performances, only expressing emotion when The Girl sparks jealousy between them. Oates is a glib dynamo constructing a new persona in every scene, as if trying on characters to play as he ping-pongs between the coasts. “How fast does it go?” asks The Driver, admiring G.T.O.’s car. “Fast enough,” he answers. The Driver snaps, “You can never go fast enough.” These are characters on the road to nowhere who can’t work up enough speed to escape themselves. –Sean Axmaker
